Day 11 Prac

I just have to say WOW I have had the most amazing experience on this Prac. I can reflect my initial response and acknowledge I was wrong. This is almost a life changing experience in regards to behaviour management and strategies. My mentor , while I appreciate others don’t understand her rationale, was so right and I have now developed an amazing rapport with the students, something I would have damaged from the start if I had gone in all guns blazing with a teaching episode. She slowly weaned me into her class and the response has been so positive. I still am hard on myself and for my session this morning I timed wrongly and finished with about 5 minutes to spare. Not great in a special ed setting, but she wasn’t critical, just said it happens to the best of us, How sweet is that. Anyway I only have 4 days left regrettably and wish this time was not about to end. I will take many special memories and all going well hope to return for my internship.

Day 9 Prac The Life of a Real teacher

HI, for those of you on prac and struggling. STOP reading because today I am on non contact to program. Yes you heard it. Non contact is given in block release of one day per term and in smaller blocks weekly at my PE site. Today I will spend a day getting as much information and support from my mentor as possible. What an experience. Did you know this is an initiative if the Qld government and as such when we begin as registered teachers we will also be entitled to this ourselves . Read all about it here.

I am super excited and hope to achieve so much today. My mentor has assigned the day for my programming which will alleviated a large amount of the at home stress thankfully. As we all know working fulltime and juggling family life can be tricky. So I must go and get ready for my day, tonight I will be doing an exam so hopefully I stay focused.

Tried and tried and am just too frustrated so ….

A tool to assist my PE

Theory

                        .

Purpose

Application to Assignment 3/Professional Experience

CLEM Model

Help understand how to learn about a new ICT and how to use it to enhance student learning.

If there are any new ICTs you need to use it might help your explorations.

Hence might be useful as a part of the planning process for Part B.

TPACK framework

use of technology to improve learning through

selection of ICT

 Useful when planning lessons

Backwards design

Beginning with the assessment criteria aligned to the curriculum and lesson planning to fulfil

Maybe very successful being in special education because your goal is obvious.

SAMR Model  Substition, Augmentation, modification and redefining  which assists in the integration of technology into a classroom setting

TIP Model  Technology Integration Planning, planning to integrate ICT to enhance the teaching

Plaiining to implement ICTs into special education is beneficial because students enjoy this technology and are more engaged

The 5Es  A process of Engaging, exploring, explaining, elaborating and evaluating to create a lesson that flows and promotes successful learning.

I will definitely be wanting to use this in my PE to ensure I engage and keep the students interest levels.

WALT & WILF  WE ARE LEARNING TO
WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR

Gives students a direct answer to the lesson

This will be beneficial as it is direct and answers all the questions to what work should look like, leaving no stone unturned as to say.

Connectivism  relates to connecting with people by understanding and creating lessons that appreciate and understand the social and cultural context of peoples circumstances

knowledge will be a big factor in teaching teens, I plan on connecting and learning as much as I can to teach the students the best way I can

Bloom’s taxonomy

Creating a deeper level of learning by working through or towards levels of Knowledge, Remember, understand , apply, analyse, evaluate, create.

interestingly, moving special education students could be a challenge but I will implement some of these levels where possible to analyse their level of understanding

Postman’s 5 things  Theres a price for technology

There will be winners and losers

Some bias will exist

Technological change will happen

Be aware of the mythical image of technology.

So much information in one theory but something to consider when planning a lesson

Toolbelt theory/TEST framework

Task, Envirnonmet, Skills, Tools, TEST framework to scaffold learning and questioning.

learning within special education will need many forms of  scaffolding and adjustments to be suitable

PKM

PKM is a set of processes, individually constructed, to help each of us make sense of our world and work more effectively

This is where I reflect and consider what I bring and how I bring it too the prac

Day 6 Prac

Today showed a different side to  the students in my PE special education class. The morning commenced with two students losing the plot and kicking and screaming. I was anxious about what the day might hold from there.  I know its quite normal for ASD children to be sensitive and from a quiet conversation between my mentor and the child , sleep was a problem for one of the students, This is quite typical and a very interesting read can be found here.  After a quick read I was feeling a bit of deja vu after I myself  had an hour and  a half disturbed sleep myself on the weekend due to my adult son with ASD.  Life throws us some curly ones I guess we just need to learn how to adjust.  Positively the class while in a hyper anxious mood all day did get through without any more explosions but it was a little like walking on egg shells all day.

I hate Lolli pops

I knew there was a reason I hated those sucky little lolly pops, but then when I watched the video of someone in my Facebook account, I freaked out and deleted so much. I noticed another friend of mine did the same, if you’re interested now and want to look here’s the link to my friends site, where she links to the video app. I am not sure if its a good thing or bad but we all need to see for ourselves and be careful how and where we supply our information.  Anyway today is day 3 of prac, loving it so far, today is drama all day so who knows what today may hold. Yesterday was another good day, a very different mix to day one with another student attending class. Wow who knew how much testosterone flies in a class full of boys, and…..one girl :). Very open to suggestions for interests of teen boys other than sex or cars.

First day- Prac

Well, I had an amazing first day, I went in all prepared for some explosion after a pre meeting with my mentor, but it was a great day. The students are in a special school but I would still say a very high level of understanding. We had a swimming lesson in the afternoon and maths and literacy blocks today.  I attended two different staff meetings in one day and learnt heaps about the curriculum or some of the issues teachers are finding in collaborating. I also was introduced to the Yumi Deadly Maths concepts.  I had a verbal response from the student who hates change and was able to assist many of the students in literacy and maths, This helped develop some relationship between us. Today I am still going into the unknown but its a safe unknown now. see you later

Prac and ICTs . I want to wish you all luck ..

HI, I have finally met my mentor, I had tried unsuccessfully to google all I could about her and yet I came up blank. Friday I got my opportunity and it was amazing. She is lovely and understood my concern for entering the highschol arena. There are 8 boys and one girl in my class. all quite high functioning yet attending a special school, so after our chat I understand there are some behaviour concerns. She was easy going, explaining that lessons flow some days and other days not, she is expecting me to have a go but not pressuring due to the class.  We have access to all forms of ICT and with teens this will be my biggest challenge accessing educational and yet high enough interest for them, after all what do teens with ASD do but play computer games endlessly 🙂 .

We have a whiteboard in the class and another student has blogged about some of the resources she will use. Not sure if these will be useful but I am happy to try anything to evaluate what level this class is at. I want to wish you all luck and remember this is one day, actually 15 days closer to achieving our goal. Go get em friends.
